UNB, Jamalpur
A BNP-backed organisation could not hold its scheduled meeting at Ghoramara Bazar in Sharishabari upazila yesterday due to imposition of Section 144 by local administration. Barrister Abdus Salam Talukder Smrity Sangsad, on April 20 announced that it would hold its workers' meeting at the venue at 3:00pm on Tuesday. The ruling Awami League-backed Advocate Motiar Rahman Talukder Smrity Sangsad later announced their workers' meeting at the venue same time. Upazila administration imposed Section 144 in and around the venue from morning till evening yesterday apparently to maintain law and order. Both the groups failed to hold their respective meetings following the restrictive measures. In Chapainawabganj, the upazila administration of Bholahat imposed Section 144 around Adampur Government Primary School in the upazila for 8 hours from 4:00pm yesterday as Bangladesh Sramik League and Jaamat-e-Islami called meetings at the same venue at the same time. The administration banned meeting, procession and gathering of more than five in the area during the period. Contacted, Afzalul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gomostapur police station said the administration imposed the ban fearing deterioration of law and order in area, reports our correspondent.
