One killed as villagers clash in B'baria
A man was shot dead and two others including a policeman received bullet injuries during a gunfight between two rival groups of Bautola village and police at Akhaura Upazila Health Complex under the district yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Abu Salek, 30, of Simrailkandi village under Brahmanbaria pourasabha.
The wounded Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Md. Safiqul Islam of Akhaura police station and Md. Kaiyum Mia, 30, have been admitted to hospital.
Kaiyum is being treated under police custody.
Locals said the clash ensued between the rivals last Monday centering the theft of a bicycle, which left a number of people injured.
Sources said as the injured of the two rival groups led by Kaiyum and Monir were admitted to hospital the members of Kaiyum group, armed with firearms, made a fresh attack on the other at the hospital premises yesterday morning.
When police appeared at the scene to control the situation, clashes further flared up between the feuding groups and the law enforcers.
Police said the armed groups hurled cocktails, which forced the police to fire back.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Mukhlesur Rahman of the district told The Daily Star that police shot 11 rounds of bullets to disperse the feuding groups trading gunfire.
After the clash the bullet-riddled body of Abu Salek was found near the spot, he added.
Police have arrested five people in this connection.
