18 Shibir men held in Bogra, Barisal
Bogra Sadar police yesterday arrested 13 leaders and workers of Islami Chhatra Shibir on charges of bringing out militant procession, reports our staff correspondent.
Police said, following the arrests they filed a case with Sadar police station against around 150 Chhatra Shibir leaders and workers.
The arrestees are Samirul, Jainal Abedin, Akram, Idris, Tanjim, Ariful, Khairul, Zahurul, Wahab Bappi, Rubel Rana, Ruhul Amin, Kafi and Sabbir.
Witnesses said, more than 100 Shibir leaders and workers brought out a procession from Park Road mosque in the town at around 1:30 pm. Carrying banners they came to Satmatha intersection. Later they proceeded towards Nawab Bari Road via Circuit House Road.
The militant procession spread panic among the pedestrians and town dwellers. Many ran helter skelter for safety.
At this police went to the scene and chased the processionists.
The procession dispersed but the Shibir men regrouped near Sonali Bank office in front of the Police Superintendent's office. Police chased them and arrested the aforesaid 13 activists.
In Barisal, police arrested five Shibir activists on charge of holding procession without prior permission, according to a correspondent.
The arrestees are students of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Mazharul Haq, student of Nursing Training Centre Rezaul Karim, BM College students Md Hasnain and Masum Billah and madrasa student Ferdous Gazi.
The arrestees claimed they were protesting 'anarchy' on the campus and 'controversial' education policy.
