Students of Aila-hit areas hold human chain, rally

Over 300 students of different institutions of Aila affected Dakop and Koira upazilas of Khulna district held a human chain yesterday at the Picture Palace cinema hall intersection in the town to protest government indifference to their untold sufferings. The participants carried empty pitchers and banners and put off their shirts to lodge their strong protest against failure of the government to resolve acute crisis of safe drinking water and complete construction of damaged embankments in the two upazilas even after 11 months of the cyclonic storm Aila. The human chain programme was followed by roadblockade and a rally at the same place. Tejendra Nath Mandol, a student of Daulatpur Government BL University College and an inhabitant of Aila-hit Kamarkhola union under Dakop upazila presided the rally. Students Kanai Mandol, Haraprashed Roy, Aloke Sarder, Ashit Roy and Chinmoy Mandol, guardians Dr Niranjan Mandol, Nishit Ranjan and Debashish Roy, general secretary of Khulna city unit of CPB advocate Ruhul Amin, Mahendra Nath Sen of NGO Jano Udjog and advocate Feroze Ahmed of Aila Durgato Mancha addressed the rally. Speakers at the rally urged the prime minister to allocate special fund in the next national budget for implementation of the rehabilitation project undertaken for Aila affected people. They also suggested formation of a high-level monitoring team to ensure the best use of the fund if allocated. The Aila-hit students said they will hold a rally in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Khulna district at 11:00 am on April 29 and submit a memorandum to the prime minister through the DC.
