11 get life for throwing acid in Madaripur
Three jailed in Satkhira for girl trafficking
A court in Madaripur yesterday noon sentenced 11 people of Rajoir in the district to jail for life and also fined each Tk 25,000, in default, to suffer another year in jail.
According to the prosecution, the 11 convicts threw acid on Zahura Bibi, 50, wife of Razzak Miah of Lundi village under the same upazila in the district in front of her house at around 5:30 am on August 21, 2005.
The attack was a sequel to previous enmity, reports a Madaripur correspondent.
The convicts are Ashraf Khandker, 55, Omar Khandker, 40, Hamid Miah, 45, Nazrul Miah, 35, Sohrab Miah, 30, Salam Miah, 30, Zahir Miah, 25, Masum Khandker, 22, Russel Miah, 18, Hobi Munshi, 40, and Mojibor Munshi, 50.
Zahura's husband Razzak Miah, on the same day, filed a case with Rajoir police station against the aforesaid persons accusing them for throwing acid.
In Satkhira, three people were yesterday sentenced to life term rigorous imprisonment on charge of trafficking a girl to India, reports our correspondent.
The court also fined each Tk 5,000, in default, to suffer three months more rigorous imprisonment.
The convicts are Babu and his wife Arzina Khatun of village Chandanpur and Mahir Uddin of village Goira in Kalaroa upazila.
The persons were acquitted of charges. They are Kawsar Ali, Mizanur Rahman and Siddique Hossain of village Goira.
Judge SM Rezanur Rahman of Satkhira Women and Children Repression Prevention Court delivered the verdict.
The case, in brief, is that the convicts took Manira Khatun, daughter of Sirajul Islam of village Hawalkhali in Sadar upazila, to India promising her a job there on October 20 in 2006.
Victim's father Sirajul Islam filed a case against the accused on January 9 in 2007.
After investigation police submitted the charge against the six accused on May 30 in 2007.
