JCD factions clash in presence of opposition chief whip: 20 hurt

Twenty people were injured as JCD factions clashed in presence of opposition chief whip Zainul Abedin Farooque at the local circuit house on Monday night. Kazi Akhtaruzzaman Jewel and Morshed Azam, president and secretary of a faction, and several pro-BNP lawyers are among the injured. Doors, windows and telephone sets of the circuit house were damaged during the clash. Witness and BNP sources said opposition chief whip Zainul Abedin Farooque reached Nilphamari on Monday evening to appear before the Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court yesterday in a defamation case filed against him by a local Chhattra League leader for bringing false corruption charges against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed Joy. The chief whip then sat with local BNP, JCD leaders and some pro- BNP lawyers in the conference room of the circuit house to discuss the activities of their respective organisations. Aktaruzzaman Jewel and Morshed Azam reached the circuit house at around 9:30pm. When the two along with their supporters tried to enter the conference room, JCD men belonging to Ahsan Ahmed and Shamsuzzaman Zaman faction prevented them, resulting in a clash between the two groups. Being informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Meawhile, the opposition chief whip was yesterday granted bail in a defamation case filed by a BCL leader. Naeem Shahriar, a central committee member of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), filed the a case with the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court, Nilphamari, on March 16 against the opposition chief whip for bringing false corruption charges against Joy. Farooque appeared in the court at noon and sought bail. Chief Judicial Magistrate Monsur Alam granted the bail. Our Rangpur correspondent reported that a court here yesterday granted bail to the opposition chief whip in a defamation case filed by a BCL leader on March 18. Jasim bin Hossain Jumman, vice-president of BCL central committee, filed the case against Zainul Abdeen Farooque MP, for bringing a false corruption charges against Joy on March 12.
