AL men agitate to make KHDC 'BNP-Jamaat free'

Leaders of eight local bodies of the ruling Awami League yesterday announced non-stop agitation against chairman and councilors of Khagrachhari Hill District Council (KHDC) and vowed to make KHDC BNP-Jamaat free. They made the announcement at a press conference held at a Narikelbagan party office in the town with municipality Awami League president Tapon Dey in the chair. Terming KHDC chairman and councilors as BNP-Jamaat men, they said chairman Ruhity Karbary is leading Mohalchhari upazila unit BNP while councillor Animesh Dewan Nandith is Sadar upazila BNP vice president, councillor Sanu Mong Marma is district Jubodal organising secretary and councillor Abu Bakar Siddique is a district unit Jamaat member. As they are BNP-Jamaat men, they do not cooperate with the government and because of this the development activities in Khagrachhari are greatly hampered, they said. They also blamed the Jamaat-BNP men for patronising militant activities and fuelling recent Khagrachhari violence. The agitation programme includes sit-in in front of KHDC office from today till ouster of the BNP-Jamaat leaders. They will also burn effigies of KHDC chairman and councilors and prevent them for using KHDC vehicles. They also urged all officials of some 20 departments (controlled by KHDC) to stop all activities till the removal of chairman and councilors. District Chhatra League president Mongshuprue Chowdhury Apu, district Jubo League joint secretary Jaton Tripura, district Krishak League president Nurul Amin, district Sramik League president Sajai Marma, district Sechwasebok League president Jewel Tripura, district Awami Lawyers Association secretary Supal Chakma, district Mohila Awami League member Nigar Sultana and a hundred other leaders attended the press conference.
