'Theft' of OMS Rice in Khulna
Ruling party men at loggerheads
Leaders of Khalishpur units of Jubo League, Chhatra League and Swechchhasebok League yesterday stormed into Khulna Press Club VIP lounge where OMS rice dealer Mridha Belayet Hossain was addressing a press conference, refuting allegation against him of selling rice meant for OMS in black market.
At the briefing, the leaders of the AL associate bodies branded Belayet a black marketeer and termed his statement false.
Mridha Belayet Hossain, also the general secretary of ward-14 unit of Awami League, was arrested on Monday while selling four bags of OMS rice in black market at Baikali Bazar under Khalishpur Police Station.
Police released him the same day under pressure from a group of local leaders of the ruling party, said OC Abu Mokaddem.
Belayet said allegation of selling OMS rice in black market is a conspiracy to tarnish his political image. A group of policemen, who are beneficiaries of four-party alliance government, cooked up the conspiracy, he alleged.
General Secretary of AL Khulna Sadar upazila unit Saiful Islam, General Secretary of AL Khalihpur unit Monirul Islam Bashar and President of ward-14 unit of AL Kazi Enayet Ali were present at the press conference.
When the leaders of the AL associate bodies protested his statements, saying that Belayet is a black marketeer and smuggler, his supporters swooped on the leaders.
Police on duty at the press club compound rushed to the VIP lounge and brought situation under control.
Jubo League, Chhatra League and Swechchhasebok League leaders also alleged that dealer Belayet had sold the entire amount of OMS rice allotted against him on the black market. They highly appreciated police for arresting him with four bags of rice.
