Shop owners at malls and in other areas of the city kept shutters down for six hours yesterday demanding immediate release of two employees of a shop at Al-Hamra Shopping City. The employees, Sayedur Rahman and Shabbir, were arrested along with three shop owners on Monday night following a clash with police at the shopping mall. The agitating shop owners and employees also blocked the road from court point to Chouhatta intersection for one and a half hours from 11:30am. They withdrew the road blockade after city Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran and AL central Organising Secretary Misbah Uddin Siraj assured them of taking immediate measures to free the two shop employees on bail. Addressing a rally in court point area with AL-Hamra Shopping City Baybosayee Samity President Abdus Salam in the chair, the speakers demanded withdrawal of the police assault case against shop owners and employees of the mall. City Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran and AL central Organising Secretary Misbah Uddin Siraj also spoke. Fifteen people, including three cops, were injured during a clash between police and shop owners and employees at Al-Hamra Shopping City on Monday night. The trouble began at around 8:00pm when a customer and the employees of a cosmetics shop at the mall exchanged heated words over price of an item. The customer went out of the mall and returned to the mall with a patrol police team at around 8:30pm. Seeing two people with knives in hands with the policemen, the shop owners and employees swooped on them, leading to a clash between the two sides. After the incident, police arrested three shop owners and two employees of the mall. They (police) later released the shop owners and produced the employees in a court that sent them to jail.
