Sylhet college teachers continue agitation

One held in connection with Prof Harun murder

Teachers of the government and non-government colleges in the district yesterday began a two-day work abstention wearing black badges to protest killing of Sylhet Government Women's College associate professor Harun-ur-Rashid. The programme was decided at a meeting of the teachers held at the women's college premises Tuesday night. The teachers also formed a committee to continue agitation, sources said. President of the BCS (Education) Association, Sylhet chapter-prof Abdul Mazid, also vice-principal of the women's college was made convener of the 'liaison' committee while Bashkar Ranjan Chakrabarty, convener of the Non-Government College Teachers Association, Sylhet chapter was made member-secretary. Meanwhile, a JCD cadre, who was picked up for interrogation Tuesday night by the Sylhet Kotwali police was shown arrested as a suspect in the case, police sources informed. Md Jamal, known as Kala Jamal was caught from his house in the city's Bankolapara in Subidbazar area. However, JCD claimed Jamal was expelled from the student organisation years ago. The arrestee has been facing a number of cases including that of murders, police said. Police will produce Jamal at the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court today with a prayer for 10-day remand, informed the officer-in-charge of Kotwali PS Mohammad Ali. Associate professor Harun-ur-Rashid of the Sylhet Government Women's College was stabbed to death by criminals Monday afternoon in front of his rented house in the city.
