Robbers loot two filling stations in Manikganj

Robbers looted Tk 8 lakh from two filling stations in Sadar and Shibalaya upazilas early Sunday. Police said 8/10 robbers coming in a microbus entered Dhaleshwari filling station in Sadar upazila to buy octane in guise of travellers at about 3:00am. As the robbers were leaving the station without paying the price of octane, the employees obstructed them. Later, at one stage, the gang took the employees hostage at gunpoint and looted Tk 3 lakh from the cash box. In another incident, 10/12 robbers in guise of buyers in a microbus went to M/s Rumy Filing Station at Mahadevpur in Shibalaya upazila at about 3:30 am. They also took the employees hostage at gunpoint and looted away Tk 5 lakh from the cash box. In Chittagong, robbers looted valuables worth Tk 10 lakh from a journalist's village home at Boro Darogahat village in Sitakundo upazila early Sunday. Police quoting family sources said an armed gang numbering 25/30 swooped on the house of Hasan Ferdous, head of news and current affairs of Radio Today at Chittagong station and also bureau chief of the daily Sangbad, breaking open the door at about 3:30am. The robbers later looted cash, 10 tolas of gold ornaments, four mobile phone sets, clothes and other valuables worth Tk 10 lakh, taking the inmates hostage at gunpoint. They also beat up the newsman's father Mohammad Hossain, 70, and mother Lutfunnahar, 60, as they tried to resist robbery. Our Staff Correspondent in Bogra adds: Three robbers were sentenced to 17 years' rigorous imprisonment in the district on Sunday. The convicts are Motiar Rahman, 35, of Chakbelkuchi village in Sirajganj, Amir Hossain, 22, of Sherbahadah Para village in Sherpur upazila under Bogra, and Taleb Mondol, 45, of Andarmanik village in Tangail. According to the prosecution, a team of police led by Sariakandi police sub-inspector Munjuar Rahman arrested them along with some bullets of locally-made pipe gun and other weapons while they were taking preparations to commit a robbery at Dharabarsha Char in Sariakandi upazila of the district on January 13, 2008. Special tribunal-4 judge Nitai Chandra Saha delivered the verdict.
