Death of schoolboy in road accident sparks protest
An angry mob set fire to a private car and damaged at least 30 other vehicles on Dhaka-Rajshahi road at Puthia upazila headquarters following death of a schoolboy in a road accident there yesterday.
The put up barricades on the road, disrupting traffic for four hours from 1:30pm.
Police and witnesses said 11-year-old schoolboy Pioas died on the spot when a Rajshahi-bound private car ran over him while he was crossing the road riding a bicycle at Puthia Bazar at noon.
Hearing the news, police rushed to the spot and seized the car. When the law enforcers were taking the car to Puthia Police Station, locals snatched the car from them in front of Puthia mosque and set it on fire.
At around 4:30pm, police again reached the spot and dispersed the locals who blocked the road demanding speed breakers at some points of Puthia. They then removed the barricades from the road.
As traffic resumed at around 5:00pm, locals again went on the rampage and vandalised at least 30 passing vehicles. Local Awami League leaders and upazila officials rushed to the spot and pacified the agitating people. They assured them of meeting their demand for setting up speed breakers at Puthia as early as possible.
