<i>'Katka tragedy day' observed at KU</i>

Teachers and students of Khulna University (KU) observed 'Katka Tragedy Day' yesterday. On this day in 2004, nine final year students of architecture department of Khulna University and two students of mechanical department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), Dhaka, met watery grave in the Bay near Katka while on a trip to the Sundarbans. The day's programmes included wearing to black badges, mourning procession, placing of wreaths at the memorial for Katka victims, milad at the university mosque after Zohr prayers, feeding the destitute and condolence meeting. Vice Chancellor Prof Mohammod Saifuddin Shah led the mourning procession in the morning. The Katka victims are Arnaz Rifat Rupa, Kauser Ahmed Khan, Ashrafuzzaman Toha, Kazi Abdul Mueed bin walid, Munadil Raihan bin Walid alias Shuvo, Abdullah-hel-Baki, Maksudul Aziz, Mostazi Nipun, Touhidul Enam Apu and Mahmudur Rahman Russel of Khulna University, and Shamiul Hasan Khan and Shamsul Arefin Shakil of Buet. A group of 78 students of Khulna University and 20 others, including the two Buet students, set out from the campus on the night of March 12, 2004 for Sundarbans by a launch. They reached Katka at 11:00am the following day. At around 1:30 pm, they went to sea beach to take bath. Suddenly, 11of them were washed away by a wave.
