I think many of us in Bangladesh know that sort of child. We may have been one. The dad who can reach the jar on the top shelf, get a stubborn bicycle moving again, or find us in a crowd at a mela. As children, we do not keep a careful record of what our fathers can and cannot do. For a while, it feels as though they can do almost anything.

Then we grow up and notice the things we missed. Our fathers get tired. They worry about money. They lose patience, make mistakes, and occasionally need someone else to open the jar. That does not make the earlier feeling foolish. It reminds us how much of a child’s world is built from being able to turn around and find a familiar face there.

Perhaps that is why this brief match feels so lovely. The girl is cheering with everything she has. Her father gets to enjoy her excitement.
