Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will inaugurate a nationwide programme on March 16 to excavate and re-excavate canals, rivers and other waterbodies.

He will formally launch the initiative in Kaharol upazila of Dinajpur.

The initiative, a key pledge in the BNP’s election manifesto, aims to restore 20,000 kilometres of waterways across Bangladesh over the next four years.

The state minister added that ministers and members of parliament will simultaneously launch the programme in 54 other districts alongside local authorities.

“In line with the prime minister’s election manifesto, we will excavate 20,000 kilometres of canals, In sha Allah,” he said.
