Of pirates and tigers: The incredible past of Moghbazar
Tigers in Moghbazar? Doesn't sound like Moghbazar at all! But today's Moghbazar and the Moghbazar of history are unimaginably different.
According to a news report published in 1865, three newborn tigers were captured from this area. Those tiger cubs were then fed cow's milk.
Moghbazar (or at least a part of it for sure) was about wilderness and jungle. Travel back around 160 years to 1865 and you have this insane story of tigers in Moghbazar.
But travel further back, and there is the incredible story of how the area got its name.
In Dhaka's history, Moghs are generally seen as Arakanese pirates, pillagers, and looters who terrorised Bengal. They were a huge headache for the Mughal government.
Eventually, the Mughals were successful in subjugating the Moghs, capturing their numerous warships.
The Moghs were then allowed to settle in Dhaka, and their place of settlement came to be known as Moghbazar!
