14 cultural organisations call for centenary celebration of Nazrul’s ‘Kandari Hushiar’
Fourteen national and cultural organisations have called for a nationwide celebration of the centenary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s iconic song “Kandari Hushiar”.
The appeal came through a joint statement issued on June 3, marking 100 years since the song was written in 1926.
According to the statement, Nazrul wrote and composed the song in response to communal unrest and violence. He first performed it on May 22, 1926, at a provincial conference in Krishnanagar. The song was later published in the magazine Bangabani, while its musical notation appeared in Kalikolom. Nazrul also performed the song at a session of the Muslim Literary Society at the University of Dhaka in June of the same year.
The organisations said the song remains highly relevant in the present day, as societies continue to face religious division, hatred and violence. They noted that the centenary celebration could help promote Nazrul’s message of humanity, harmony and communal unity.
The organisations urged the government, cultural institutions and educational establishments to organise cultural events, discussions and awareness programmes across the country to commemorate the centenary of the historic song.
Among the signatories were Bangladesh Nazrul-Sangeet Songstha, Jatiya Rabindra Sangeet Sammilan Parishad, Bangladesh Ganasangeet Somonnay Parishad, Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi and several other cultural organisations.
