Woman murdered for dowry

A housewife was killed allegedly by her husband for dowry in Bhatara Bazar area in Sarishabari upazila of the district yesterday.

The deceased, Taposi, 22, wife of Lavlu Mia, 32, a cane made products trader of Mesta Satunia village in Sadar upazila.

Victim's father Tofazzal Hossain, a resident of Chandanpur area in the upazila, said Lavlu had been putting pressure on Taposi for Tk 50,000 as dowry for the last couple of weeks.

At one stage of altercation over the issue, Lavlu strangled Taposi yesterday and later hung the body from the ceiling of their rented room and fled the scene, Tofazzal alleged.

Neighbours spotted Taposi's hanging body around 11:00am and informed the police, Officer-in-Charge Rezaul Islam of Sarishabari Police Station said.

Police recovered the body that bore injury marks on the throat and sent it to Jamalpur General Hospital morgue for autopsy, the OC added.
