Storms kill 2, damage over 100 houses in Patuakhali, Pirojpur

Two women were killed and over 100 houses damaged as storms lashed three upazilas of Patuakhali and Pirojpur districts yesterday morning.

The storms also uprooted several hundred trees and electric poles in the upazilas.

Our Patuakhali correspondent reported that two women were killed in Sadar and Galachipa upazilas as their mud houses collapsed under the falling trees.

The deceased are Tanjila Begum, 19, daughter of Kuddus Hawlader of Hartaki Baria village in Sadar upazila; and Selina Begum, 25, of Bhanga village in Galachipa upazila.

Hanif Sikder, 55, Chan Baru, 50, of Chotobighai village and Salma Begum, 22, of Sharikkhali village under Sadar upazila were injured while they were going to another place from their houses to take shelter. Salma Begum was admitted to Patuakhai General Hospital.

One and a half years old Nirob went missing as a boat capsized in the Ramnabad River during the storm. His parents Badol Sikder and Kulsum managed to swim ashore.

Away in Pirojpur, a storm damaged over 100 houses, several hundred trees and many electric poles at Pattashi union under Zianagar upazila of the district yesterday morning, reports our correspondent.

The storm started lashing Kalaiya, Pattashi, Bhabanipur, Charani Pattashi, and Charakhali villages at around 10:00am and lasted for half an hour.

Md A Gani Khan, a member of PattashiUnion Parishad (UP) member of Ward No 8, said the storm damaged over 20 houses and uprooted a large number of trees in his ward.

Md Ruhul Amin, member of Ward No 9 under the same union, said the storm caused huge losses to the people of his ward. Electric poles and a good number of trees were uprooted in the ward, he added.
