Schoolgirl saved from marriage

A schoolgirl was saved from early marriage in Gopalpur upazila while a man was fined for marrying off his daughter at an early age in Sakhipur upazila.

In Gopalpur upazila, fifth grader Parul Akter, 15, daughter of Bhutto Miah of Maizbari village, was going to be married with Ramjan Miah, 21, son of late Based Miah of the area, on Monday night.

On information, a police team led by Abdul Jalil, officer-in-charge of Gopalpur Police Station, rushed to the spot, foiled the marriage and arrested the bridegroom.

Arrestee Ramjan was produced before a mobile court, led by Executive Magistrate Masumur Rahman, which sentenced him to seven days' imprisonment.

A mobile court yesterday fined Lebu Miah of Kachua village in Sakhipur upazila Tk 1,000 for marrying off his daughter at an early age.

Executive Magistrate Arifa Siddika led the court.
