'Robber' killed in 'gunfight' in Barguna

A ringleader of an inter-district robber gang was killed in a "gunfight" between his cohorts and police in Amtoli upazila of Barguna early today.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Jabbar, 50, of the village.

Tipped off that a gang of inter-district robber gang was preparing to commit robberies at Kalagachhia village, a police team went to the spot around 3:00am, said Officer-in-Charge of Amtoli Police Station Mohammad Shahidullah.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on the police, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.

At one stage, Jabbar was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, while the others managed to flee.

Four policemen were injured during the reported gunfight.

Police sent Jabbar's body to local hospital for autopsy.
