An alleged robber was killed in a "gunfight" between his cohorts and police at Ashuganj upazila of Brahmanbaria early today.

Sharfin, an assistant sub-inspector of Ashuganj Police Station, suffered severe injury during the incident and was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Md. Selim Uddin, acting officer-in-charge of the police station.

The deceased was identified as Sharif, 28, son of Abdur Rahman of Char Chartala village in Ashuganj. He was accused in eight robbery and explosive cases filed with Ashuganj Police Station, the OC said.

Being tipped-off that a gang was taking preparation to commit robbery at Sonarampur on Dhaka-Sylhet highway, a police team conducted the drive in the area around 3:00am.

Sensing the presence of police, the robbers opened fire at law enforcers prompting to retaliate that triggered "a gunfight".

Sharif came in the line of fire and died on the spot while the other members of the gang managed to flee the scene, the OC added.

Police recovered one pipe gun, bullets and three machetes from the spot.
