Rajshahi cop ‘beaten’s by drug peddlers

A police official was beaten up allegedly by drug peddlers in Dharampur area of Rajshahi city this afternoon.

The victim Shamiul Islam, an assistant sub-inspector of Motihar Police Station, is now undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) with head injuries, our Rajshahi staff correspondent reports quoting police.

Acting on a tip-off, Shamiul went to the area to arrest a fugitive accused of a case under the Narcotics Control Act, said Amir Jafar, deputy commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.

Senescing his presence, a group of drug peddlers swooped on Shamiul and beat him up with sticks, leaving him critically injured, the police official said.

On information, police rescued Shamiul and sent him to the RMCH, he added.
