Mymensingh AL activist killed

An Awami League activist was killed and 10 others were injured yesterday during an intra-party clash in Balipara Railway Station area under Trishal upazila of the district over establishing supremacy in the locality.

The dead Saiful Mollah, 40, son of Nasiruddin Mollah of Balipara, was supporter of Balipara Union AL President Golam Mohamamd Badal, also chairman of Balipara Union Parishad.

The two groups -- one led by Badal and the other by union Jubo League Convener Md Abdul Bari -- had long standing dispute over supremacy in the locality.

Local people said the clash began at one stage of altercation between the two groups in the railway station area over assault of local AL activist Saiful. Both the groups used sharp weapons, leaving 11 people, including Saiful, injured.

Trishal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman said critically injured Saiful succumbed to his injuries on way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

He said, on information, police rushed to the spot and fired several rounds of blank shots to disperse the clashing groups.

Additional police have been deployed in the area to avoid further clash, the OC said, adding that the situation is now under control.

Trishal Upazila AL Convener Reza Ali said he was informed about the incident but could not say anything about the victim.
