Govt officials, UP chairman arrested

Members of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Dinajpur yesterday arrested five government officials and a union parishad (UP) chairman in Thakurgaon on charge of embezzling six tonnes of rice under Vulnerable Group Development (VGD) programme through forgery.

The arrestees are Nirmal Kumar Barman, chairman of Dholahat UP in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila, Golam Kibria, project implementation officer (PIO) in the upazila, Biplob Kumar Singh Roy, food control officer in Thakurgaon Sadar, Maidul Islam, in-charge of Gorerhat Food Warehouse, Shabuddin Ahmed, in-charge of Sadar Food Warehouse, and SM Golam Kibria, in-charge of Shibganj Food Warehouse.

Abu Hena Ashiqur Rahman, deputy director (DD) of ACC in Dinajpur, said the market price of the rice was Tk 2.38 lakh.

The arrestees were later produced before a court in Thakurgaon, said the DD.
