BNP leader held over attacks on Hindus

Star Online Report

Police detained a local leader of BNP early today in connection with the recent attacks on Hindu community in Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria.

The detainee was identified as Amirul Chakdar, a leader of Nasirnagar upazila unit BNP, said Abu Zafar, officer-in-charge of Nasirnagar Police Station.

It started with an alleged Facebook post that triggered Islamists to vandalise at least five Hindu temples and ransack over a hundred houses of the minority group on October 30.

Later, several other attacks were carried out periodically where houses of the Hindu community were set fire to. The latest incident of such arson was last Sunday.

While the intent of the attack was claimed to drive Hindus from their land, blames have been put on two Islamist outfits which rallied in Nasirnagar moments before the attack on October 30.

The spate of attack has sparked widespread flak all over the society. Protests over the repeated attacks have poured in from all corners of Bangladesh.
