Attacks on Santals: 2 more arrested

Police in overnight drives arrested two more people for their alleged involvement in the attacks on the Santal people in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha.

Sarwar, 41, and Abrar Ali, 50, residents of Kamalpara village in the upazila were arrested from different parts in the upazila, said officer-in-charge of Gobindaganj Police Station Subrata Kumar Sarkar.

With the latest, a total of 10 people have so far been apprehended in connection with the attacks on the Santals on November 6 when a triangular clash ensued among the indigenous people and the workers of Rangpur Sugar Mills and police following an attempt by the workers of Rangpur Sugar Mill to evict the Santals from the mill area.

A platform of concerned citizens today demanded compensation for the families of the dead and injured victims.  

Police were conducting drives to arrest the perpetrators, the OC added.
