Most Ctg shopping malls, markets will not reopen before Eid

Most of the shopping malls and markets in Chattogram city will remain closed till Eid-ul-Fitr, despite the government allowing markets to reopen from tomorrow.

Traders decided not to open the shopping malls and markets considering the risk of coronavirus infection despite the government's permission, said Chattogram Shop Owners' Association General Secretary Sayed Khurshid Alam.

Besides, it is not possible to ensure all the government directives are followed, like shopping within two kilometres of one's residence, during rush hours before the Eid, he added.

The decision was taken following a meeting between market owners and Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mahabubor Rahman at the latter's headquarters in city's Dampara today.

However, the shop owners of Riazuddin Bazar and Jahur Hawkers markets, the biggest business hub in Chattogram, said they were not sure what to do.

CMP Commissioner Mahabubor Rahman said they (market owners) have decided not to open their shops for a period amid the coronavirus threat.

"On behalf of the police, we have asked whoever wants to open markets for business, to maintain health guidelines and proper safety and security measures as per as government order," he added.

According to market owners, there are 300 markets and shopping malls in the city.
