DU provost committee recommends against reopening residential halls on May 17

Considering the current Covid-19 situation in Bangladesh, the provost standing committee of Dhaka University (DU) has recommended against reopening residential halls on May 17.

The recommendation came from a virtual meeting of the committee comprising all 18 hall provosts, pro vice-chancellors and with VC Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman in chair this afternoon.

"The decision to reopen residential halls on May 17 has been postponed due to the recent upsurge in coronavirus cases," Sir AF Rahman Hall Provost Dr Saiful Islam told our DU correspondent.  

"We will take further decision in this regard considering the Covid-19 situation in the country and after ensuring the vaccination of the students," said Dr Saiful Islam, also a member of the committee.

Confirming the matter, DU Proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani said the recommendation not to reopen halls on May 17 will be placed before the Academic Council meeting of the university which is supposed to be held on May 6.

The Academic Council would finalise the matter in its meeting, Prof Golam Rabbani added.

Amid ongoing agitation by students, Dhaka University authorities On February 23 decided not to hold any exams or reopen student dormitories before May 17.
