The demonstrating teachers of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) yesterday observed work stoppage as they continued to press home their demand of removal of Vice Chancellor Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan.

The teachers, under the banner "Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkhak Brindo", also organised a rally on the campus.

Besides, they stormed the registrar's office demanding that the authorities concerned accept resignation letters submitted by them earlier this year. The teachers left after Isfaqul Hosain, the registrar, told them that the vice chancellor did not take any decision in this regard as he has been ill.

Speakers at the rally alleged that the vice chancellor has influenced Bangladesh Chhatra League activists to turn against them in a bid to cling to his post.

Prof Syed Shamsul Alam, convener of the teachers' platform, said BCL men assaulted several teachers when the activists swooped on their pre-scheduled demonstration to stop VC Aminul Haque Bhuiyan from entering his office on August 30. The teachers also demanded judicial investigation into the incident.

On April 20, 35 teachers submitted resignation letters in regard to different administrative posts held by them.
