Is Bangladesh ready for mobile numbers as digital IDs?

How long have you had the same mobile number? Five years, eight, ten? You have likely switched handsets, changed jobs, moved house, opened bank accounts and taken up mobile finance and online shopping. Yet one thing has almost certainly stayed the same: a number that lives in the phones of family and colleagues and in the records of your bank, MFS provider, online platforms and government services, often checked to confirm you are who you claim to be, before the familiar text arrives: “Your OTP is 123456”.

A number meant simply to connect one person to another has quietly become the thread linking banking, payments, shopping, identity verification and public services: a de facto digital identity. This is why people resist giving up a number used for years. Changing it means updating banks, MFS accounts, platforms and contacts, not just buying a SIM.

Telecommunications has traditionally asked where a call should go. A digital economy needs a sharper question: where is this number connected right now, and what is the safest way to reach it?

This is what Mobile Number Portability (MNP), introduced in 2018, was designed to solve: it lets subscribers switch operators while keeping their number, because changing providers should not mean rebuilding an identity.

Let the network change. Why should the identity? That principle matters more when control of the number is compromised. When one number is linked to a bank account, an MFS wallet and multiple online identities, controlling it becomes an attractive target. SIM-swap fraud illustrates this: an attacker moves a victim’s number to a SIM they control, so OTPs and password-reset codes meant for the real owner reach the attacker instead, creating a pathway to financial or identity theft, especially when combined with phishing.

Real-time network intelligence matters for fraud detection, as recent SIM changes and other risk signals can flag transactions that deserve scrutiny.

Bangladesh need not wait for a major breach to build this ecosystem. The responsibility is shared: customers must protect their OTPs; operators must strengthen SIM security; banks and platforms should add risk-based authentication; and regulators must keep rules abreast of technology, especially when subscribers change networks. The number stays the same while the network behind it does not.

So, is Bangladesh ready? The transformation has already happened: mobile numbers are deeply embedded in the digital economy. The task now is making that ecosystem secure as networks and services keep changing. This requires aware customers, responsive regulation and sustained investment in cybersecurity. No single institution can do this alone. Return to that number you have carried for years. It is just a string of digits, yet around it sits your bank account, MFS wallet, contacts, OTPs and relationships. You can change your phone, provider and network. What you should not have to lose is the identity built around that number.

The mobile number is more than a telephone number: it is a bridge between our physical and digital lives. The question is no longer whether this is happening, but whether we can make that identity secure and trustworthy enough that switching networks never puts our digital lives at risk. When someone next asks for your mobile number, they may not be asking, “How do I reach you?” They may really be asking, “How do I recognise you in the digital world?”
