No profit haircut for Sammilito Islami Bank depositors: BB governor

Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman today instructed Sammilito Islami Bank to inform all depositors that there will be no haircut on their profits.

The instruction came when Kazi Shairul Hasan, chairman, and Abedur Rahman Sikder, managing director of the bank, met the governor at the central bank in Dhaka, according to a press release.

During the meeting, the governor noted that while the finance minister had announced in the Parliament that depositors' profits would not face any haircut, ambiguity persists among depositors on the issue.

He directed the bank's leadership to address this immediately through clear communication.

Depositors are already being refunded under the scheme announced on December 29, 2025.

From September 1, individual depositors will be able to withdraw their Al-Wadiyah current account, Mudaraba savings account, and Mudaraba term deposit principal amounts as per the scheme.

The governor added that Sammilito Islami Bank PLC -- which began as the country's largest and only state-owned Islamic bank with a capital of Tk 35,000 crore -- will take steps to resume all normal banking activities as soon as possible.

Deputy Governors Md Habibur Rahman, Md Kabir Ahmed, Md Sarwar Hossain and Md Anisur Rahman were also present at the meeting.
