CU teacher found dead at home

Police recovered the body of a Chittagong University professor from inside his home in Paharika Housing Society area yesterday.

The body of Prof Md Abul Kalam Azad of Mathematics was found hanging from the ceiling. The freedom fighter was 62.

His wife Shahanara Begum, a professor of Chemistry at the same university, discovered his body when she returned home from work around 4:00pm.

Officer-in-Charge Belal Md Jahangir of Hathazari Police Station said they recovered the body around 7:30pm in presence of the upazila nirbahi officer and family members.

“No injury mark was found in his body. We preliminarily suspect that he committed suicide … ,” he added.

Quoting family members, the police official said Prof Azad was depressed.

He said the family members had requested that no autopsy be carried out.

However, an executive magistrate of Hathazari told The Daily Star that an autopsy would be carried out this morning.

Prof Azad also left behind two sons and a daughter.

The former dean of Science Faculty had been elected to the university syndicate from BNP-Jamaat-backed “White Panel”.
