Chittagong University marked its 60th founding anniversary today with a rally, cake-cutting, discussion, and cultural performances.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Mohammed Shamim Uddin Khan inaugurated the event at Smaran Chattar. A rally paraded past the Shaheed Minar and the library's Jarutala before concluding in front of the administrative building.

The cake-cutting ceremony was held at 10:30am, followed by a discussion at 11:15am and a cultural event at 3:00pm.

Prof Shamim said, "We remember with deep respect those who contributed to the establishment of this university. Despite our many achievements and renowned teachers, researchers, and scientists, we have often been neglected due to inadequate budgetary support. Had that not been the case, our situation today would have been different. Compared to countries that were are a similar level during our independence, we still lag behind."

He added that alumni engagement is crucial for infrastructure development, and reforms initiated will show results in four to five years. "If teachers, officials, and staff uphold global standards, CU can emerge as a distinguished centre of higher education."

Chittagong University Central Students' Union Vice-President Ibrahim Hossain Roni said, "What began with just 60 teachers and four departments is now a large family. A milestone like the diamond jubilee deserved an even grander celebration. The biggest challenge CU faces is the acute shortage of accommodation. Although the founding act envisioned a fully residential university, that goal remains unfulfilled. We hope we will not have to raise this demand again during the 61st anniversary. We believe the administration will act promptly to resolve these issues."

Special guest SM Fazlul Haque, member of the Senate and Syndicate, Proctor Prof Hossain Shaid Shohrowardhy, Cucsu General Secretary Sayeed Bin Habib, and Assistant General Secretary Ayubur Rahman Toufiq also attended.

The event was chaired by Prof Mohammad Al-Amin, dean of the Faculty of Science and convener of the 60th University Day Celebration Committee.
