WhatsApp makes it easier to catch up in group chats
WhatsApp has recently introduced a new feature called Group Message History, designed to help users catch up more quickly when joining group conversations.
The feature allows group administrators and members to share a selection of recent messages with newly added participants. When a user joins a group, existing members will see an option to send between 25 and 100 of the most recent messages, providing context without requiring screenshots or manual forwarding.
In a recent blog post, WhatsApp said the feature remains protected by end-to-end encryption, in line with the platform’s existing privacy standards. The company added that sharing message history requires an explicit action by a member, and group administrators have the option to disable the setting. Admins will retain the ability to share message history even if the broader setting is turned off.
To promote transparency, WhatsApp will notify all group members when message history is shared, with timestamps and sender details clearly displayed. Messages included in the shared history will also be visually distinct from new messages posted in the chat.
The rollout of Group Message History has begun gradually and will expand in phases.
