OpenAI's revenue surpassed $20 bln in 2025: OpenAI CFO
OpenAI's Chief Financial Officer, Sarah Friar, recently announced that the company's annualised revenue for 2025 has surpassed $20 billion, a significant increase from $6 billion in 2024.
Friar stated in a blog post that the revenue growth closely tracked an expansion in computing capacity, which rose to 1.9 gigawatts in 2025 from 0.6 gigawatts the previous year. She added that the number of weekly and daily active users continues to hit record highs.
The financial update follows OpenAI's recent move to begin showing ads to some US users of ChatGPT, a step to generate more revenue to fund its costly technology development. Separately, a report from Axios on Monday cited OpenAI's policy chief saying the company is "on track" to unveil its first consumer device in the second half of 2026.
Looking ahead, Friar said OpenAI's next phase will focus on AI agents and workflow automation. For 2026, the company will prioritise "practical adoption" of its technology, especially in health, science, and enterprise sectors. She noted that OpenAI maintains a "light" balance sheet by partnering with other companies rather than owning its own infrastructure, allowing for flexibility across different hardware providers.
