Mirza Fakhrul meets Canadian envoy, discusses polls, rights situation
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today discussed election and human rights situation of the country in a closed-door meeting with Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Lilly Nicholls.
The meeting held for around one and half hour at the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's Gulshan office.
After the meeting, BNP's standing committee member, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, told journalists that Canada gives importance to human rights, democratic rights and rule of law and took a strong position on these issues always.
"We discussed human rights situation in Bangladesh, next election and rule of law situation in Bangladesh. We had a very good discussion," he said. "Canada's concern over this issue is very natural."
Asked exactly what they discussed regarding the next election, the BNP leader said, "We cannot say what we discussed in closed-door meeting but you can understand."
BNP's international affairs secretary Shama Obayed was also present in the meeting.
