Leather industry targets $1.77bn exports

Bangladesh’s leather industry has evolved from a raw-hide supplier into a diversified manufacturing sector spanning tanning, leather goods and footwear. Today, the industry supports hundreds of thousands of jobs, processes millions of square feet of leather and produces hundreds of millions of pairs of footwear each year. Export earnings now exceed $1.7 billion, reflecting decades of investment in processing, manufacturing and value addition. Yet the sector’s future growth will increasingly depend on environmental compliance, traceability, modern infrastructure and access to premium global markets. These figures capture the scale of an industry still moving steadily up the value chain.
