Pediatric obesity is a complex condition with multiple subtypes
Study suggests 8 medical conditions are common in U.S. children diagnosed with obesity, and approximately one-third of children in the United States are overweight or obese. A study publishing recently in PLOS Digital Health by Elizabeth Campbell at Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, and colleagues suggest that childhood obesity may be associated with an array of underlying medical conditions.

AIDS 2022 spotlights a game-changing tool to prevent sexually transmitted infections and key advances in HIV cure research
The DoxyPEP study found that taking 200 mg of doxycycline within 72 hours of condomless sex significantly reduces the risk of gonorrhoea, chlamydia and syphilis among men who have sex with men and trans women. In addition, among those randomised to take doxycycline, 65% fewer were diagnosed with an sexually trnasmitted infection (STI) each quarter than those not taking doxycycline.

Might metformin protect against hepatocellular carcinoma?
Metformin monotherapy and strict glycemic control were associated with lower risk in patients with diabetes and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Diabetes and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) have well-established epidemiologic links; NAFLD, in turn, is a risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is typically mediated by steatohepatitis and cirrhosis. These findings raise the question of whether diabetes control – or specific diabetes medications – may reduce the risk of HCC.
