Milan, Italy, April 7. Beneath the polished veneer of modern civilisation, the primal instinct within can surface without warning, especially when emotions run highest. Football has a way of pushing players to their absolute limit, and sometimes, the intensity of the moment gets the better of them. The 1990 World Cup witnessed one such flashpoint; an unexpected outburst that stunned the sporting world and left an indelible mark on the history of the beautiful game.

The setting was the iconic San Siro in Milan, where two fierce rivals -- West Germany and the Netherlands -- met in a high-stakes round of 16 clash. Laden with the weight of history and footballing supremacy, the encounter carried an air of simmering hostility long before kickoff.

At the centre of the storm were Dutch midfielder Frank Rijkaard and German forward Rudi Völler -- two players renowned as much for their brilliance as their competitive edge.

The flashpoint came just 20 minutes into the match. After a reckless challenge on Völler, Rijkaard was shown a yellow card -- one that would rule him out of the next match. Frustration soon boiled over. As Völler walked away, Rijkaard spat on the German’s curly hair, triggering outrage.

Völler confronted him immediately but Argentine referee Juan Carlos Loustau booked both players, much to the German’s frustration.

Moments later, tensions escalated again. During a German free-kick, a clash inside the Dutch penalty area saw both players fall. Rijkaard reacted furiously, grabbing Völler by the ear and kicking him. The referee, having seen enough, showed red cards to both players.

Yet the most disturbing moment was still to come. As they walked off towards the tunnel, Rijkaard spat at Völler for a second time -- an act that stunned viewers worldwide and became one of football’s most infamous images.

Despite the humiliation, Völler maintained composure, while the incident quickly spread across global media, shocking millions.

Years later, both players reconciled -- apologising, sharing a breakfast table, and even appearing together in a commercial. Time may have softened the edges but the incident remains a grim reminder of how quickly the beautiful game can descend into ugliness.
