As Lionel Messi brought down the curtain on his Argentina career, Argentine Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia bid farewell to the captain with a heartfelt letter that focused not on his goals or trophies, but on his humility, commitment, and lasting legacy.

“That day that no one wanted to come has arrived. But time is inevitable, and here we are, trying to find words to write the end of a cycle. Not the end of the story. Because there are stories that, when they become eternal, no longer have an end,” Tapia wrote.

Rather than recounting Messi's extraordinary achievements, the AFA chief highlighted the qualities that defined him throughout his career with the national team.

Tapia praised Messi's humility even when the world was at his feet, his work ethic despite having nothing left to prove, his respect for every teammate and the way he welcomed newcomers and supported those going through difficult moments.

“Your commitment to this jersey, even when wearing it weighed more than anyone could imagine,” Tapia wrote.

The letter also recalled the difficult moments of Messi's international career, including the criticism and doubts that once led him to consider stepping away before choosing to return.

“The Copa America arrived. Wembley arrived. And finally, that afternoon in Qatar arrived, which Argentinians will forever cherish in the most beautiful place in our memories,” Tapia wrote, referring to Argentina's 2021 Copa America triumph, the 2022 Finalissima victory at Wembley and their World Cup triumph in Qatar.

Yet, according to Tapia, Messi's greatest contribution went beyond the trophies.

“You did something even greater: you united generations. Grandparents, parents, children and grandchildren embraced by the same jersey, crying for the same number ten. That is also your legacy.”

Tapia's closing message captured the significance of Messi's departure from the national team.

“Jerseys are hung up one day. Matches end. Stadiums go dark. Legends don't. And as long as there's a ball rolling in our country, as long as a kid shouts a goal in the sky blue and white jersey, as long as an Argentinian remembers where they were on that December 18th, you'll still be there.”

He then signed off with a final tribute to Argentina's captain.

“Our captain. Our champion. Our number 10. My favourite hero. Thank you for everything, Leo. This will always be your home.”
