Who is Nicolo Tresoldi, the hattrick hero wanted by Italy and Germany?
Nicolo Tresoldi made history at San Siro on Tuesday, scoring a hattrick to inspire Club Brugge to a stunning 4-3 Champions League victory over Inter Milan.
The 22-year-old striker also strengthened his growing reputation as Italy and Germany compete for his international allegiance.
Born in Cagliari, Italy, on August 20, 2004, Tresoldi moved to Germany as a child and developed through Hannover 96’s youth system before making his senior debut in 2022. He joined Belgian club Club Brugge in June 2025 on a contract until 2029.
Tresoldi has represented Germany at youth level, including the Under-21 team, but remains eligible to play for Italy at senior level. His Italian roots and fluency in the language have kept the Azzurri interested, while Germany are keen to retain a forward who has developed through their youth system.
His hattrick against Inter was particularly special because Tresoldi is a lifelong supporter of AC Milan, the Nerazzurri’s city rivals. Only Gareth Bale had previously scored a Champions League hat-trick against Inter at San Siro.
“It was incredible, indescribable,” Tresoldi told Sky Sport Italia. “I had dreamed so many times of a night like this, but to score three goals and win here at San Siro is beyond words.”
Tresoldi confirmed that he had spoken to representatives of both federations, as well as Jurgen Klopp and Roberto Mancini, about his international future.
“I am happy with what I’m doing in Germany, and then we’ll see,” he said. “I always speak Italian at home, I was born in Italy too.”
Italy have already been monitoring Tresoldi, with a scout reportedly sent by Azzurri coach Roberto Mancini to the match in San Siro. Mancini had confirmed in September that he had spoken to the forward, who was unwilling to make a decision before honouring his commitment to Germany’s Under-21 side at the European Championship in June.
“He said that he feels 50 per cent Italian and 50 per cent German. Hopefully by June he’ll feel 51 per cent Italian and 49 per cent German,” Mancini had said.
For now, Tresoldi remains committed to Germany’s Under-21 side, with a European Championship title among his targets. His senior international decision remains open, leaving both countries hoping to secure the services of one of European football’s emerging young forwards.
