BFL resumes after two-month break

After an unplanned two-month hiatus caused by the mid-season transfer window and the lack of preparation among several clubs, the Bangladesh Football League (BFL) -- the country’s top-tier professional competition -- is set to resume today across four venues, with attention centred on the title contenders and teams battling relegation.

Following the mid-term transfer window, all clubs except holders Mohammedan Sporting Club, reigning runners-up Abahani and Bashundhara Kings -- who were barred from taking part in transfers following the FIFA restriction -- reinforced their respective squads with the inclusion of foreign players as well as some local players, which actually suggests intense competition in the title race and the battle to escape relegation.

Five-time champions Bashundhara Kings and Fortis FC shared the lead with 18 points each from nine matches after the completion of the first-phase league on January 3, while Rahmatganj MFS, Bangladesh Police FC and Abahani are breathing on the shoulders of the leaders, having 15, 14 and 13 points respectively.

On the opening day, five-time champions Bashundhara Kings are likely to face a stiff challenge from newcomers PWD SC at the Kings Arena, as they signed up three players from Ghana, Brazil and Russia, along with three players from Bhutan and Pakistan, in a bid to avoid relegation.

In Cumilla, visitors Rahmatganj MFS, having a new forward from Ghana, will also have an edge over Abahani, who are, however, supposed to play with three foreign players for the first time in the season, while Brothers Union will certainly pose a threat to Bangladesh Police in Gazipur, with new signings of three Guinean players as well as five Pakistani recruits.

In Manikganj, neighbouring Arambagh KS and Fakirerpool Young Men’s Club will battle for supremacy after bringing a few changes to their respective squads.
