Spinners keep Tigers in the game

Star Sports Report

Bangladesh spinners prevented India from running away in the game on the final session of the second day of Dhaka Test today.

From 253 for four, with the visitors looking at ease with Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer unbeaten on aggressive half-centuries, Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan combined to pick three wickets, including Pant and Iyer's who both missed out on three figures, in six overs.

However, India's tail frustrated the hosts as the visitors amassed 314 all out in their first innings after 86.3 overs, to lead by a handy 87 runs. Taijul and Shakib picked four wickets apiece, while Miraz and Taskin each scalped one.

UPDATE: Bangladesh began their second innings under dying light and ended the day at seven for no loss after safely negotiating seven overs. Openers Najmul Hossain Shanto and Zakir Hasan will resume the third day as the Tigers trail by 80 runs.

Earlier, Taijul Islam claimed three early wickets in the second morning before Taskin Ahmed had Virat Kohli caught behind for 24 in the post-lunch session, leaving India in serious trouble after resuming on 19-0.

But Pant and Iyer launched a counterattack to add 159 of 182 balls for the fifth-wicket stand to put the pressure back on the hosts.

Bangladesh missed some key opportunities to take control of the Match. Miraz dropped Iyer on 19 off Taskin before wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan missed a simple stumping chance off Shakib soon after.

The first session of the day belonged to Bangladesh as Taijul had KL Rahul (10) and Shubman Gill (20) out leg-before in successive overs before he dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara for 24.

The left-arm spinner then broke the fledgling 34-run partnership between Pujara and Kohli just as the duo looked set.

Pujara, who completed 7,000 Test runs during the innings, was caught by Mominul Haque at forward short leg.
