Hasan strikes after DRS blunders; AFG 34/1 at lunch

Hasan Mahmud’s relentless probing finally paid off after Bangladesh squandered a review and missed a clear edge as Afghanistan reached 34 for one at lunch on the second day of the one-off Test in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, trailing by 312 runs.

Afghanistan’s openers began cautiously against the new ball, but the morning session could have unfolded differently had Bangladesh been more decisive with the Decision Review System (DRS).

Hasan’s appeal for lbw against Sediqullah Atal in the first over of the innings was turned down. Bangladesh reviewed the decision, but the review was struck down as the ball had brushed the batter’s pads on its way to the wicketkeeper.

In the third over, Hasan, Litton Das and the slip cordon appealed vociferously for a catch behind, convinced Atal had edged a delivery that nipped away from him. The umpire remained unmoved, and Bangladesh chose not to review. Replays subsequently showed a clear spike on UltraEdge, confirming the outside edge and exposing a costly missed opportunity.

Hasan, however, kept asking questions.

Bowling with discipline and extracting movement, he conceded just 11 runs in seven overs, including two maidens, before finally breaking through in the 11th over.

Atal attempted an expansive drive at a length delivery that seamed away, only to find a thick outside edge. Najmul Hossain Shanto took a sharp catch at first slip to send the opener back for 17 off 31 balls, including three fours, at 30 for one.

Abdul Malik was unbeaten on 15, with Shahidullah on two, as Afghanistan reached 34 for one in 13 overs at the interval.

Bangladesh, who resumed on 317 for eight, had earlier added 29 runs before being bowled out for 346 in 92.3 overs. Nayeem Hasan remained unbeaten on 35 off 67 balls, while Taijul Islam made nine and Ebadot Hossain fell for a duck.
