Mushy heroics propel Tigers to first ever bilateral series win over SL
After Mushfiqur Rahim's brilliant century helped Bangladesh pile up a decent total, a splendid bowling display from the likes of Mustafizur Rahman, Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan helped the Tigers beat Sri Lanka by 103 runs, courtesy of the DLS method, in a rain-interrupted second ODI at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today.
With this win, Bangladesh also sealed their first-ever bilateral series victory against the Lankans as the Tamim Iqbal-led side won the three-match series 2-0 with a match in hand.
After electing to bat, Mushfiqur's dazzling 125-run knock off 127 deliveries helped the Tigers post a competitive 246 in 48.1 overs.
While in chase of the target, Sri Lanka were 126 for nine in 38 overs when rain interrupted the game for the third time. After resumption, the match was reduced to 40 overs, courtesy of the DLS, with Sri Lanka now requiring to achieve a target of 245 runs inside the remaining two overs -- an impossible feat at that point. The visitors ended up scoring 141 for nine in 40 overs.
This win also saw Bangladesh move to the top of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League table with 50 points in eight matches. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's chances of qualifying directly into the 2023 World Cup in India now seem grim as they are sulking at the bottom of the table with zero wins in five games.
Premier all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan remains within touching distance of a few personal milestones after this game. Shakib claimed his second wicket of the game when he trapped in front Dhananjaya de Silva in the 25th over of the game. With that wicket, Shakib, on 269 ODI wickets in 211 matches, now remains tied with Mashrafe Bin Mortaza for most wickets in ODIs for Bangladesh. Mashrafe scalped the same number of wickets in 218 ODIs for Bangladesh.
That wicket also saw Shakib tied with legendary Pakistan left-arm seamer Wasim Akram for most wickets scalped by a player at a single venue. Dhananjaya's wicket was Shakib's 122nd wicket at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur in his 84th ODI at the venue.
Wasim Akram scalped 122 wickets in 77 games at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
Defending a decent total, Bangladesh bowlers did a brilliant job as they picked up wickets at regular intervals, denying the Lankans to put up any threatening partnership. Off-spinner Miraz and pacer Mustafizur picked up three wickets each while Shakib scalped two wickets in the game.
Earlier, Mushfiqur played one of his best ODI knocks to bring up his eighth ODI century. The ever-so-reliable batsman, who scored 84 off 87 deliveries in the first match, was dismissed for 125 off 127 deliveries as the hosts were bowled out for 246 in 48.1 overs.
Rain delays Tigers' first ever series win over SL
Rain at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today interrupted the second ODI between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka for the third time as the Tigers are made to wait to ensure their first-ever series win over Sri Lanka.
Before rain halted proceedings, Sri Lanka, in chase of a 247-run target, were struggling at 126 for nine after 38 overs. The win for Bangladesh seems just a matter of time as even DLS won't be able to help Sri Lanka.
Miraz removes Shanaka as pressure mounts on SL
Off-spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz picked up the wicket of Dasun Shanaka as pressure keeps on mounting on Sri Lanka in the second ODI at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today.
Miraz claimed his second wicket of the game when Shanaka went for a sweep but a leading-edge saw the ball end up at the hands of Mahmudullah Riyad at midwicket.
Sri Lanka lost their sixth wicket and are reeling at 109 for six after 31 overs.
Shakib strikes again
Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan picked up his second wicket of the game as Sri Lanka look out of sorts during their 247-run chase in the second ODI at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today.
A ball that went in with the arm struck Dhananjaya de Silva on his pads and the umpire did not hesitate to raise his finger. Dhananjaya had to walk out after a 21-ball 10 as Sri Lanka lose their fifth wicket.
After 28 overs, Sri Lanka are 102 for five and are desperately in need of a good partnership.
Spinners get into action as Tigers put SL in spot of bother
Bangladesh spinners got into action, with Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan scalping two quick wickets to put Sri Lanka in a spot of bother in the second ODI at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today.
Off-spinner Miraz trapped in front Kusal Mendis after the right-hander scored 15 off 22 deliveries. A typical off-break from Miraz that went on to hit Mendis on his pads. The batsman challenged the umpire's decision but review showed it would have gone to hit the leg stump.
Just a few overs before, in the 19th over of the game, premier all-rounder Shakib picked up the wicket of Pathum Nissanka to end yet another growing Sri Lankan partnership.
A shorter length delivery from Shakib and Nissanka tried to pull but could not time it due to the extra pace on the delivery. The right-hander ended up scooping it in the air and Tamim Iqbal at mid-wicket took the catch following a fumble.
Sri Lanka's main area of concern was the lack of partnerships during their 33-run loss in the first ODI. And there seems to be no improvement in that regard in today's game as well.
After 24 overs, Sri Lanka are struggling at 87 for four with Ashen Bandara on 6 of 8 deliveries and Dhananjaya de Silva on 8 off 17.
Fizz, Shoriful strikes help Tigers maintain pressure on SL
After left-arm paceman Shoriful Islam picked up his first ODI wicket, pacer Mustafizur Rahman, also a left-armer, got in on the action as he removed Danushka Gunathilaka to help Bangladesh maintain pressure on Sri Lanka in the second ODI at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today.
A back of a length outside off delivery from Mustafizur and Gunathilaka cuts it straight to the one fielder posted outside the circle at deep point. Shakib Al Hasan, who was standing there, took a simple catch as Sri Lanka lost their second wicket.
Before this wicket, debutant Shoriful picked up the prized wicket of Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Perera. Sri Lanka, who were looking to rebuild after the loss of skipper Perera, would now have to once again start the rebuilding process.
After 16 overs, Sri Lanka are 59 for two with Pathum Nissanka on 18 off 30 deliveries and Kusal Mendis on 3 off five deliveries.
Debutant Shoriful picks up his first ODI wicket
Thanks to a splendid catch by Bangladesh skipper Tamim Iqbal, debutant pacer Shoriful Islam got the first scalp of his ODI career during Tigers' second ODI against Sri Lanka at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today.
And it was the prized wicket of Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Perera, who looked to charge the debutant but was only able to give a catch at mid-on after going for an uppish drive. Perera walked out after a 15-ball 14 as Bangladesh, who are defending a 247-run target, got their first breakthrough.
After seven overs, Sri Lanka are 25 for the loss of one wicket with Pathum Nissanka (0 off 4) and Danushka Gunathilaka (11 off 23) out in the middle.
Update: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced that all-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin, who has shown signs of concussion following a hit on the helmet during Bangladesh's innings, has been replaced by a like-for-like player Taskin Ahmed for the game. Saifuddin suffered the blow off a Dushmantha Chameera delivery in the 47th over of Bangladesh's innings.
End of Bangladesh's batting: Mushfiqur 125 carries Bangladesh to 246
Mushfiqur Rahim played one of his best ODI knocks in the second match against Sri Lanka in Mirpur today, bringing up his eighth century as Bangladesh went to a position of strength from a vulnerable state.
The ever-so-reliable batsman, who scored 84 off 87 deliveries in the first match, was dismissed for 125 off 127 deliveries as the hosts were bowled out for 246 in 48.1 overs.
The diminutive batsman went at the crease after just seven deliveries and got out as the last man, trying to clear mid-off against Dushmantha Chameera, in the process collecting more than half the runs of the innings.
Earlier, rain intervened for the second time as Mushfiqur Rahim was stranded on 96, with Bangladesh 213 for seven in 43.3 overs.
The second time the rain came it was heavier and forced the players to scamper off the field, throwing the fate of the match in doubt.
Mushfiqur, who scored 84 in the first match, was playing a lone hand with 96 runs off 111 deliveries. The second-highest score (41) of the innings came from the bat of Mahmudullah Riyad.
End of 35th over:
Bangladesh moved to 172 for five at the end of the 35th over, thanks to a 87-run fifth-wicket partnership between Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad.
These two had added 109 runs in the first ODI, and today they added 87 valuable runs before Mahmudullah (41) became the third victim of Lakshan Sandakan.
Mushfiqur Rahim was batting on 64 off 85 deliveries while Afif Hossain moved to 9.
End of 14th over:
Bangladesh were struggling at 66 for three at the end of the 14th over of the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Mirpur on Tuesday, with Liton Das the third batsman to be dismissed.
Das, struggling for runs in recent times, looked to be getting towards some sort of rhythm as a slowly built a partnership with Mushfiqur Rahim after Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan fell cheaply. However, the elegant right-hander got out to a loose shot against Lakshan Sandakan's spin for 25 as Bangladesh were reduced to 49 for three in the 12th over.
Rahim (15*) was joined by Mosaddek Hossain (9*), who replaced Mohammad Mithun in this match.
Earlier, after a wayward first over from Isuru Udana which went for 15, Bangladesh lost both Tamim and Shakib in the second over bowled by Dushmantha Chameera.
Tamim was trapped leg-before for 15 as he walked across the stumps, with the ball shaping back in -- a very common mode of dismissal for the opener. Shakib, who has looked out of his depth with the bat in recent times, was trapped in front in the same over for a three-ball-duck, the ball nipping off the surface and hitting his back leg, the bat nowhere close to the line of the delivery.
