Riyad strikes patient ton

Star Online Report

Mahmudullah Riyad went on to hit a brilliant ton under perilious circumstances -- his fourth Test ton -- even as Bangladesh are staring at defeat in the first Test against New Zealand.

It was at this very ground, Seddon Park, Hamilton, where Riyad had struck his first-ever Test ton back in 2010. He went through a barren patch in Tests going without hitting a single ton for a period of eight years following that maiden ton. In November last year he struck tons against Zimbabwe and West Indies to break the run of matches without hitting a century before his ton today.

He partnered Soumya Sarkar, who hit 149, during an impressive 235-run stand for the fifth-wicket as Bangladesh reduced the margin of deficit following New Zealand's incredible first innings lead. He reached his ton after Soumya fell to Trent Boult and is currently at the crease batting. He has so far hit 20 fours and three sixes.
