Three-day state mourning for Khaleda Zia, public holiday tomorrow

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus announced a three-day national mourning and a one-day public holiday tomorrow, the day of former prime minister Khaleda Zia's funeral prayer.

In a televised address, Yunus said the nation has lost a guardian with Khaleda Zia's passing. He described her as a profoundly eminent figure in Bangladesh's politics, whose extraordinary role in the struggle for democracy, establishment of a multi-party political culture, and advocacy for people's rights will remain indelible in history.

Khaleda's janaza likely tomorrow, burial beside Ziaur Rahman: Salahuddin

BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is likely to be laid to rest beside her husband late President Ziaur Rahman at Zia Udyan in Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed shared the information with the media today.

Khaleda Zia death leaves irreparable void in Bangladesh politics: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said the death of party Chairperson Khaleda Zia has left an irreplaceable void in Bangladesh's politics.

"We never thought we would have to stand before you with this news. Even this time, we hoped she would recover as she did before and return to us," Fakhrul said, speaking with tears in his eyes.

JnUcsu election postponed following Khaleda Zia's death

The Jagannath University Central Students' Union (JnUcsu) and hall union elections, scheduled to begin at 8:30am today, have been postponed following the death of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Rezaul Karim confirmed the decision after an emergency syndicate meeting convened by the university administration.

Political parties and leaders express condolences 

Different political parties and leaders have expressed their condolences over the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

National Citizen Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam expressed his condolences on Facebook over the death of Khaleda Zia. 

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman wrote "May the Almighty Allah, Lord of the Universe, bestow His mercy upon Begum Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the BNP, forgive her, and accept her as a guest in His beloved Jannah."

Islami Andolon Bangladesh Ameer Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim, popularly known as Pir Saheb Charmonai, expressed deep condolences over Khaleda Zia's death. 

Zonayed Saki, chief coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolan wrote in a Facebook post, "BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia is no more! Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. We are deeply saddened by her passing!"

The central executive committee of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) expressed deep sorrow at the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, a top leader of the united democratic movement against Ershad's military regime, and a key figure in the 1990 mass uprising, said a statement of the party.

CA Yunus mourns death of Khaleda Zia

Chief Adviser of the interim government Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of three-time former prime minister, symbol of the democratic movement, and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

In a condolence message, the chief adviser said the nation has lost one of its great guardians with the passing of Khaleda Zia. "I am deeply shocked and saddened by her death," he said.

BNP announces a 7-day mourning to mark the demise of Khaleda Zia

BNP will observe seven days of mourning following the death of party chairperson Khaleda Zia, the party announced today.

The mourning programmes were announced at a press conference held at Evercare Hospital by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

As part of the programme, black flags will be hoisted at all BNP offices across the country for seven days. Leaders and activists at all levels of the party will wear black badges during the mourning period, he said.

Prayers will be held at every party office, Rizvi added.

He also said condolence books will be opened at the BNP offices, including the party chairperson's office in Gulshan, the central office at Nayapaltan, and district-level offices, where political leaders and well-wishers will be able to write messages paying tribute.

Khaleda Zia no more

"Khaleda Zia passed away at around 6:00am, just after Fajr prayer," said a post on the BNP's verified Facebook page.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also confirmed her passing.
