Relatives take away body of blast victim from DMCH morgue

Star Digital report

Qatar expatriate Suman's body was forcibly taken away from the DMCH mortuary by his relatives and friends.

They were waiting at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for about four hours to get the body of Md Sumon, 21, a migrant worker in Qatar.

But the police were reluctant to give the body without conducting an autopsy.

About 60-70 relatives, friends, and neighbours thronged the hospital and took the body away from the morgue of DMCH Emergency Department around 9:45pm.

This incident caused tension at the hospital as the relatives and friends were locked into a brawl with police and Ansar members.

"What should we do? Leave the body like this? You [journalists] are there, just to make videos. Who will think about us?" Sumon's elder sister Soma Akhter told The Daily Star before leaving DMCH.

At least 60-70 people were seen taking the body outside of DMCH. Then they left for their Suritola home in an ambulance.

While taking away the body, Suman's friends claimed that the emergency department morgue staffers misbehaved with them and demanded money.

However, these allegations have been denied by the employees working at the morgue, police and Ansar members. They expressed anger that the body was taken without post-mortem.

Meanwhile, authorities have started to handover the bodies of the victims to their relatives.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Kazi Hafizul Amin told The Daily Star that they have begun the process at night in presence of police. They have set up a temporary booth to make the process smooth, he added.

So far, till 1:00am, 11 bodies of victims have been handed over to their relatives, he said.

As per the directives of the prime minister, each family of the deceased has received Tk 50 thousand and each family of the wounded has received Tk 25 thousand, he said
