'Mortal Kombat' Reboot: James Wan Added as Producer
Fans have been clamouring for a new live-action movie of Mortal Kombat for years. The 1995 adaptation, directed by Paul W. S. Anderson earned a respectable $122 million worldwide while Mortal Kombat: Annihilation was universally despised, and did not make half as much at the box office.
The short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth gave rise to the web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, and then New Line Cinema began development on a new big-screen adaptation. Despite the struggles faced by the new venture to get off the ground, Furious 7 and Aquaman director James Wan has been hired to produce and bring new life to the reboot.
From Mortal Kombat: Rebirth writer Oren Uziel and The Expendables writer Dave Callaham, the script for the reboot is said to follow "a seemingly harmless guy who realizes his potential when he finds himself caught in the middle of a cross-dimensional battle between the warriors of Earth and the monsters of Outworld. Now, in order to stop the world from total destruction, he must win the martial arts tournament known as Mortal Kombat."
